CIELAP's 4th Partnering for Sustainability Workshop

Achieving Resilient Agricultural Systems: Innovation, People and Partnerships
November 13 and 14, 2008

Workshop Steering Committee
Workshop Context as it relates to the UN's Commission for Sustainable Development

CIELAP's fourth Partnering for Sustainbility workshop will foreshadow and feed into the United Nation’s Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD). The CSD emerged as a means to ensure effective follow-up and implementation to Agenda 21, the program of action adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The CSD is responsible for reviewing progress on specific themes in the implementation of Agenda 21 as well as providing policy guidance at the local, national, regional and international levels.

The CSD meets annually in New York in two-year review and policy cycles. CSD’s 2008/2009 cycle covers the thematic issues of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land Use, Drought, Desertification and Africa.

CIELAP’s workshop will bring together multiple sectors to discuss domestic case studies, lessons learned, and best practices and to inform the Canadian government's participation at CSD 2009.  The workshop's focus has been narrowed from the broad CSD themes to provide a focused discussion on issues that emerged as being important at CSD 2008. CIELAP's workshop will focus on the domestic context, although international linkages will be brought forward.
